Three generations of making goodness in Quinte.
Meet the Maker Sprague FoodsIn 1925, the Sprague family built a seasonal cannery in Mountain View, Prince Edward County, to preserve locally grown vegetables and they have been canning organic and natural food products in the Bay of Quinte Region ever since.
Now in its fifth generation and operating out of its third cannery, a state-of-the-art facility located in Belleville’s East Industrial Park, Sprague Foods offers an expanding line of soup and bean products. In addition to producing their own brand, Sprague also produces for a select group of private labels and distributes products throughout Canada and the United States.
Sprague has embraced technology and European food trends to scale the business and maintain quality in the process. With an investment in robotic packaging, Sprague Foods is reaching new heights in efficiency on its production floor. Now they’ll be able to produce higher volumes more efficiently, allowing Sprague Foods to commit to new partners – such as their ongoing relationship with Costco.
Sprague’s Canned Heat process removes the need to heat and sterilize water since it no longer accompanies the vegetable inside the can. This has some serious environmental benefits as it allows Sprague to ship 50% more cans per truckload because of the weight reduction ultimately reducing costs and emissions per shipment.
“There is a significant trend that more and more Canadians want to buy Canadian products,” says company President Rick Sprague. And Sprague Foods’ location in the Bay of Quinte allows them to get their products across Canada more efficiently.
Sprague Foods size is one of its greatest advantages over the competition. As a small batch producer, it allows them to quickly adapt to new and emerging food trends.
